Budget Boost for Welsh Waste Sector

3rd April 2014

WRAP Cymru is seeking exemplar projects to complete its ARID programme

Outstanding recycling and reprocessing businesses can increase their investment budget thanks to capital funding from WRAP Cymru’s EU-backed ARID (Accelerating Reprocessing Infrastructure Development) programme.

They can apply for up to 40 per cent match funding towards the cost of developing small-scale reprocessing facilities or segregated recycling collections.

There is up to €200,000 per application on offer for small-scale reprocessing facilities and up to £50,000 for collections or bring sites. While the emphasis is on the Welsh Government’s target materials, exceptional projects working with other materials may be considered.

To be eligible, businesses must operate in Wales’ Convergence region (North West Wales, West Wales and the South Wales Valleys), employ fewer than 250 people, and have a turnover of less than €50 million. WRAP Cymru is particularly looking for innovative projects which focus on quality.

ARID – which is funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government – is designed to increase the amount of waste diverted from landfill by developing recycling and reprocessing infrastructure.

Since its introduction in late 2011 it has supported 39 businesses which will create over 140 new jobs as a result of this support. Businesses already benefitting from ARID funding include National Recycling Awards 2014 finalist Derwen Group Ltd,  social enterprise Antur Waun Fawr, and Pontllanfraith’s Polymer Extrusions.

WRAP Cymru European Projects Manager Bettina Gilbert said:

“ARID has come to epitomise the very best of the Welsh resource management sector, supporting growing businesses throughout the Convergence region. With most of the funding already allocated, we want to raise the standard even higher and fund only the most innovative projects.”

Funding will be allocated on a first come, first served basis and it is anticipated that applications will close during the first half of the financial year.
